Essential home maintenance tips

As a homeowner, it's essential to keep your home in good condition to ensure it remains a safe and comfortable place for you and your family. While some maintenance tasks may require the help of professionals, there are several simple things you can do to keep your home in excellent condition. In this blog post, we'll explore some of the essential home maintenance tasks that you can do on your own or with the help of a handyman.

Check your HVAC system

Your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system is critical for maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature throughout the year. It's essential to check your HVAC system regularly to ensure it's running efficiently. A dirty or clogged air filter can cause your HVAC system to work harder and may increase your energy bills. Change your HVAC filter every three months or as recommended by the manufacturer.

Clean gutters and downspouts

Gutters and downspouts play an essential role in protecting your home's foundation from water damage. It's important to clean your gutters and downspouts regularly, especially during the fall and winter months when leaves and debris can accumulate. A clogged gutter can cause water to overflow and damage your home's foundation.

Inspect your roof

Your roof protects your home from the elements, and it's essential to inspect it regularly for any signs of damage or wear. Look for missing or damaged shingles, cracked flashing, or any other signs of damage. If you notice any issues, it's best to call a professional roofer to repair or replace your roof.

Check your plumbing

Plumbing issues can cause significant damage to your home, and it's essential to check your plumbing regularly for any signs of leaks or damage. Look for damp spots or water stains on ceilings or walls, and check under sinks for any signs of leaks. If you notice any issues, call a professional handyman to repair them.

Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are critical for keeping your home safe, and it's essential to test them regularly to ensure they're working correctly. Replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors every six months or as recommended by the manufacturer.

Seal windows and doors

Seal windows

Air leaks around windows and doors can cause your heating and cooling bills to increase. It's essential to seal any gaps or cracks around your windows and doors to prevent air leaks. You can use weather stripping or caulking to seal any gaps or cracks.

In conclusion, regular home maintenance is critical for keeping your home in good condition and ensuring it remains a safe and comfortable place for you and your family. While some maintenance tasks may require the help of professionals, there are several simple things you can do on your own or with the help of a handyman. By following these tips, you can ensure your home remains in excellent condition for years to come.

Ready to roll with a new larger workshop on wheels

I recently upgraded to a 7’ tall 7’ wide and 16’ long trailer. I am not bumping my head as much when I work in the trailer. It has more working room and more storage space. Just like the old trailer it has heat, lighting and ventilation, and it has a vacuum system so when I use the table saw it collects the dust. The trailer allows me to bring all the tools I need to a job and access them quickly. I can work very efficiently so that when I go to handyman jobs, I don’t waste time setting up and cleaning up. 80% of my jobs can be serviced with the trailer without a need to stop at a big box hardware store.

Plenty of room for all of my tools supplies and space to work.

It even has a coat hook!

This homeowner is ready to crush his new year's resolutions!

Gyms are still closed in Pennsylvania due to COVID-19 restrictions, but that won’t stop this homeowner from crushing his 2021 fitness goals!

The gym weighs about 600 lbs. I feel more fit after assembling it. It came in 20 boxes and each box weighed between 20 and 50 lbs. It took about an hour to unpack the boxes and get organized by laying everything out. It took about 1 hour to was tricky. It’s a 2-man job, but with ingenuity you can do it with one person. I had to build one side of it and prop it up so I could put the Rogue Fitness piece between the two sides.

When your holiday gifts don't fit through the chimney...

or the front door, or the sliding glass door.

This homeowner called when he couldn’t fit his 4-player video game console through his front door - or his sliding glass door. He asked me to take off the door so he could bring it in to the house. After I took off the sliding glass door, it still didn’t fit. The door was 30” wide. The game was 34” wide. There was no way to pivot it or tilt it to get it through the space. Once I took off the door trim, we got the game into the house.

We had to reinstall the door back to the house with sealing tape. I replaced the molding, and repainted and now it is a good as new.

Ready to roll with a workshop on wheels

I just built out this workshop on wheels. I started with an empty 6x14’ utility trailer. I do a variety of jobs during the day and I frequently need to pick up materials and supplies from building supply stores. I needed a way to easily bring all of my tools and supplies without loading and unloading my vehicle every day. I built out custom shelving and storage to keep my tools. I have a built-in workbench, storage for ladders, odds and ends.

It has lighting, heat and ventilation, so if I have work that can be done in the trailer such as cutting or sanding, I can keep your home clean and quiet.

It even has a cup holder!
